Cubism and Dimensions Earn Nthabiseng Most Commercial Range Award

Nthabiseng Molefe’s cubism and dimensions inspired collection was rated as the Most Commercial Range on Friday (03 October 2014) during the finale of the University’s Annual Fashion Show 2014 at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre, DUT Steve Biko Campus.

Cubism, the most influential visual art styles of the early twentieth century which began as an idea, ultimately becoming a style, is based on Paul Cézanne’s three main ingredients: geometricity, simultaneity (multiple views) and passage. Dimensions refers to a measurable extent of a particular kind such as length, breadth, depth or height.

Drawing her inspiration from different fabrics and her fascination of cubes, the flamboyant Fashion and Textiles third-year student said her love for art was something she was born with. Molefe, who first studied Graphic Design before pursuing a diploma in Fashion and Textiles, said putting together fabrics has proven to be her main game compared to her other artistic love of graphic design.

“I am a creative person by nature, I love art. Anything that has to do with being artistic speaks to me. It is the reason why I first pursued Graphic Design before going into fashion design. This is where Nthabiseng can fully express herself,” she said.

Molefe’s range was one of the top 15 final collections featured on the Show’s finale on Friday (03 October 2014). This year’s theme: BLOG THIS BEESH, allowed students to express their identity and make a social statement through their range. Meena Bagwandin, a Lecturer within the Department, said the class of 2014 had extended itself by incorporating fabric printing to enhance their designs. “Students have chosen fabrics, embellishments, accessories and various elements, including their personal style and focus on quality, to show off their creations,” she said.

Although Molefe was happy about the win, she felt that she still needs to work harder at achieving her goals in the fashion industry. “There is still a long way for me to go in this industry. This is not even close to a start, I still need to go to the South African Fashion Council, just to get experience on how they work and to grow my skills. There is still plenty of room for me to learn but I am grateful for this win,” she said.

Molefe, also hopes to intern at a leading fashion company, whether it be in KwaZulu-Natal or anywhere in South Africa. Molefe will also be joining eight other students from her department in next year’s African Fashion International Fasttack programme, which offers designers an opportunity to “fast track” their careers through intensive mentorship, business development coaching and mentorship for future success.
