DUT Alumnus Clinches SAIIE Student Title

DUT Alumnus Clinches SAIIE Student Title

Another DUT student is winning awards!

Clinching the title of ‘Winning Student’ in the annual SAIIE National Student Competition for the best final year industrial engineering project has been an honour and a dream come true for DUT alumnus, Nadeem Sheik.

The National SAIIE Student Competition is held under the auspices of the South African Institute of Industrial Engineers (SAIIE), which gives recognition to students in the field of Industrial Engineering. The competition is only open to final-year industrial engineering university students, who submit work on projects that they have embarked on as part of their academic work. These works are then judged on the basis of how they (students) contribute to solving industry challenges.

Sheik, who is studying towards a BTech degree this year (2014), says this win has been a cherry on top. “I feel so blessed and proud to have achieved such an accolade. Studying at DUT has really paid off for me. I have completed my national diploma with DUT and I have acquired many practical skills and knowledge that has prepared me for the working world when I was doing my in-service training. My lecturers and mentors have played a huge role in influencing me to achieve such a prestigious title,” he said.

Andrew Naicker from DUT’s Industrial Engineering Department was also thrilled to hear about Sheik’s win. “The Department would like to congratulate Nadeem Sheik on his success and wish him all the best for his presentation at the conference. He has done the Department and Faculty really proud with his efforts and we would like to commend him for his hard work and dedication. A special thanks to his industry mentor Mr Ravi Thaver from Transnet Freight Rails and DUT supervisor Mr Uttam Pancha for the sterling guidance given to the student during his project,” he said.

Sheik’s project topic that secured his win was titled ”Idle Wagons”.

“The objective of this project was to reduce, or if possible, eliminate idle time and to improve overall equipment effectiveness with regards to Transnet Freight Rails grain wagons. The project provided relevance to the working world in terms of service delivery and achieving service excellence,” he said.

As part of his prize, Sheik will present his winning paper at the prestigious annual SAIIE Conference which is taking place at the Glenburn Lodge, Magaliesburg, from 14 to 16 July 2014.
“I expect it to be a nerve wrecking experience as presentations in front of crowds are not my strongest points but I also expect it to be a good opportunity to put myself out there,” he said.
Sheik’s advice to students wanting to study at DUT “is to continuously work hard and be determined to achieve the best you possibly can”.
