Aspiring designers from the Durban University of Technology’s Fashion and Textiles Department will go head-to-head during this year’s Annual Fashion Show set to kick off on Wednesday (October 2, 2013), ending on Friday (October 4, 2013) at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre on the Steve Biko Campus in Durban.

The coveted event, hosted and organised by the University’s Fashion and Textiles Department, will showcase the designs of 37 DUT third-year students with the best 20 ranges featured at the final showing.

This year’s show is themed i-aesthete, a theme designed to get designers to look at their aesthetic to question their idea or appreciation of beauty. The theme is also a play on the digital age we live in and how we receive and process information, and in turn how this affects our aesthetic eye or I.

“This year’s theme focussed on a reflection of art, culture and nature. The students were tasked to put together a cohesive collection of seven fully accessorised outfits that is reflective of their personal development, style and character. Their inspiration was drawn from the global environment and the interpretation of the theme led them on a journey of self-discovery; a journey to express their identity and make a social statement. All the ranges are innovative, visually creative and different and the show boasts a diverse range clothing,” said DUT Fashion and Textiles HOD Sunthra Moodley.

This year’s panel of judges will include established designers from the local fashion industry. Sponsored prizes will be awarded to the best designers of the Most Innovative Range, Most Commercial Range, Best Technical Student, Best Menswear Range and Best Range on Show.

“The class of 2013 have extended themselves by incorporating fabric printing to enhance their designs,” said third-year lecturer, Meena Bagwandin. “The show affords them a platform to expose their current talent by meeting and fulfilling the theme of the show. They have chosen fabrics, embellishments, accessories and considered various elements, including personal style and focus on quality to showcase their work,” she said.
