DUT Fashion Students Set the Bar for Designing to a New Level

Setting the fashion bar higher and higher is definitely evident in the works of DUT’s Fashion and Textiles students who showcased their creative designs at the second day of the 2014 DUT Annual Fashion Show held at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, DUT Steve Biko Campus, last night (Thursday, 2 October 2014).

Fashionistas, students, family and friends filled the Sports Centre to capacity just to catch a glimpse of the dynamic and innovative designs on the runway.

Under the theme: Blog this Beesh, students were inspired by the wonders of the universe, using futuristic, biological, naturalistic materials, neutral colours and vibrant accessories – taking designing to a whole new technological era. Going backstage before the show, nerves, excitement and sheer adrenalin were in play as designers and models went through their paces, rehearsing their steps as well as getting groomed for hair and make-up.

Starting the show was Candice du Preez whose usage of white fabric with A-lines, upside down triangle mottos and frills on stunning dresses wowed the audience. However, it was evident that the crowds were cheering for a few favourites for the night.

Top on the list was Blaire Hill, who opted for more natural designs, with her beetroot coloured range of dresses, skirts and tops. Her usage of natural fabrics such as bamboo, rayon, silk-hemp and natural dyes is evident that designers like Hill are looking at ways to design with care to the planet. Going for the “country bumpkin” look was designer Adelaine Patchappen, whose range was simple, elegant, with flowery chiffon prints and rustic colours which is clearly popular this Spring season.

Topping the list with the most cheers from the crowd was for the gorgeous Neliswa Buthelezi, whose range had a ‘New York’ runway look with her pleated designer dresses with gold trimmings on the side, just an indication of how talented DUT designers are in keeping up with the trends of the fashion capitals but also creating looks that deserve notice from the world.

A more unique designer whose garments created a stir was Lauren Straker who said she was inspired by the reflection of the street, architecture and the weather. Her bold and dynamic range was reflective of her interest in experimenting with bright maroons, black and blue fabrics, resulting in very ‘in your face’ designs.

Tonight (Friday, 3 October 2014), the judges will have a tough decision in choosing 15 of the best. Show-goer Kirsty Chalmers cannot wait for tonight’s announcement of the top 15 designers. She is rooting for her friend Lauren Straker. “I’m rooting for my friend but it’s going to be a tough decision for the judges to make as each and every designer really put their heart and soul into their creations. I will be back for the finale and wish everyone the best, but most of all, I do hope Lauren Straker makes it to the finals as she was definitely a top contender,” she said.
