DUT Graduands Urged to Play Active Role In South Africa’s Future

Infant and maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS and TB are – amongst others – the greatest challenges facing the South African health sector. Given the current state of this battling sector, DUT Vice Chancellor Professor Ahmed Bawa told the graduates of the Faculty of Health Sciences that the onus is now upon them to make a difference.

Today (Thursday 19 April) marks the end of the Autumn Graduation Season at DUT. The faculties of Health Sciences and Applied Sciences concluded this eventful and successful period.

The Director of Corporate Affairs at DUT Mr Alan Khan told the elated bunch to make the most of this momentous occasion as it signifies their hard work and excellence throughout the years. “We are proud of you,” he said.

Over the past week, the University has graduated approximately 4700 of its students, Prof Bawa said. He saluted the graduates as well as parents whose sacrifices have made this achievement a reality. “This is a day to enjoy, a day to remember and a day to celebrate. We also celebrate with you,” he said.

Prof Bawa reminded the students of the critical role they will have to play in their respective fields now that they have completed their studies. He emphasised that the class of 2012 should engage actively in the country’s economy, become entrepreneurs and bring about changes in the management and leadership of the country.

The Director of International Education and Partnerships, Doctor Lavern Samuels extended a hearty thanks to the organising team, whose dedication and tireless efforts have made all 14 graduation ceremonies a success.
