DUT Graduates Urged To Take Care Of Their Health

Graduating indicates a new beginning; a new chapter and a milestone in one’s pursuit of his or her dreams. It was these sentiments that resonated during the Faculty of Applied Sciences graduation ceremony, held at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, Steve Biko on Thursday (April 18, 2013).

In his opening speech, Prof Bawa, the Vice- Chancellor and Principal of DUT, congratulated the graduates on their accomplishment. “You have successfully integrated knowledge with the workplace. This has been achieved through good partnership between students and lecturers. It is now your duty to contribute to the growth of our economy; this country needs high trained and skilled young people. Make sure you maintain your link with the University and come back to pursue post graduate studies,” he said.

Furthermore, Prof Bawa urged graduates to “always defend our democracy (whenever) our constitution is under threat”. To the parents, guardians and all those who contributed to the journey of the graduates, he showed appreciation saying: “I salute you for the sacrifices you made in giving your children education. You are fundamentally important to this ceremony.”

Dr Ramneek Ahluwalia, the Director of the Higher Education HIV/AIDS Programme (HEAIDS), was the guest speaker at this graduation ceremony. He told the graduates that good health should take priority in their lives, warning them against consuming illegal substances such as drugs and alcohol. “Prioritise your health: exercise and act responsibly. I hope you have changed your behaviour as research shows that people who are (more) exposed to the HIV/AIDS pandemic are young people. You are the next leaders and if you are in good health, you (will be) capable of pursuing your dreams,” he said.

He then appealed to graduates to use the knowledge that they have acquired to empower their communities. This, Dr Ahluwalia said, will be key in fighting diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. He concluded by wishing the graduates only the best in their endeavours.
