DUT Graduation by Numbers

The Durban University of Technology will hold its annual Spring Graduation at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre this Thursday, 6 September 2012, where a total of 973 students are expected to graduate.
Various qualifications will be presented to granduands from the six faculties and the Business Studies Unit.

Undergraduate courses:

A total of 592 students will receive their National Diplomas, 264 of which are female and 328 are male. There are 351 Bachelor of Technology (BTech) granduands in total. Of these, 126 are female and 225 are male. Only one female Bachelor of Education student will be graduating.

Post graduate courses:

Sixteen (16) female students will receive their Master of Technology (MTech) degrees while 12 male students will receive theirs. One (1) Doctor of Technology (DTech) degree will be conferred to a female student. There are three (3) students with disabilities who will graduate during this graduation. The highest number of granduands come from the Business Studies Unit in the Bachelor of Technology in Management.

Sessions:

In the first session, scheduled for 9am, degrees will be conferred to students in the Faculties of Accounting and Informatics, Applied Sciences as well as the Faculty of Arts and Design.

The three faculties boast four, two and one Master of Technology (MTech) students respectively.

In the first session, DUT will confer an honourary Doctor of Technology Degree in Accounting to CEO of FirstRand Ltd and charted accountancy great, Sizwe Nxasana for his immense contribution towards the accounting field and exceptional efforts in community development.

The Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment will graduate their students in the second session, taking place at 1pm. Ten (10) qualifications will be conferred to MTech students, eight (8) from the Health Sciences Faculty and two (2) from the Engineering and the Built Environment Faculty.

The Honourary Graduand in this session will be Ela Gandhi, Trustee of the Gandhi Development Trust. The grand daughter of world renowned humanitarian and non violence activist, Mahatma Gandhi, Ela has followed in her grandfather’s footsteps throughout the years, impacting many impoverished communities.

The final session of the Spring Graduation will take place at 5pm where granduands in the Faculty of Management Sciences will graduate. This faculty boasts 11 MTech granduands, the highest number as compared to all faculties, and one Doctor of Technology graduand.

The Guest Speaker will be Wiseman Madinane, Executive Manager at Transnet and President of DUT Convocation.
