DUT Hockey ‘Tigers’ Are Victorious Against Thomas Moore

The Durban University of Technology’s hockey girls picked up where they left off in the University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament by winning their first game of the new season.

The ‘Tigers’, as they are affectionately known, won 2-0, last Saturday , 2 August 2014, at Riverside Sports Ground against Thomas Moore.
The first few minutes of the game were tough for DUT with Thomas More attacking at every chance that they got.

The coaches were kept on their feet as they constantly were giving instructions to the teams that battled for a win.
The Tigers came back in the second half conceding a penalty flick when one of their players was obstructed in the circle. Both of the goals were scored by the captain Zaba Mthembu.

“I am happy with the team’s performance today, I think winning Gold at the USSA tournament really helped us a lot to play as a team,” said an excited Mthembu.

Coach Nathi Ngubane, who recently won silver with his SA U15 boys’ hockey team in Austria, had mixed reactions with regards to the girl’s performance in their first game of the season.

“I’m happy that the girls won but I think that there are still a few more things that need to be worked on,” he said.
The next game for the DUT hockey girls will be this Saturday 9 August 2014, against UKZN, their arch rivals. This will be an away game for the Tigers.
“There is no two ways about it we have to win the game because we lost against UKZN in the first half of the season,” said coach Ngubane.
