DUT Honours Sports Stars

The 2011 Durban University of Technology Sports awards ceremony took place on Wednesday 12 October at the Grayville Race Course in Durban.

The 2011 Durban University of Technology Sports awards ceremony took place on Wednesday 12 October at the Grayville Race Course in Durban.

The awards honoured the university’s stars in local and international sporting events. Speaking at the function, Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Bawa said, “The Sport Administration Department does very well with the little resources that it has. From now on, we will work closely with the department to improve the capacity and make it an enterprise.”

Sports Star of the year went to World Athletics Silver medalist Shane Victor, Sports women of the year went to Bongiwe Msomi whilst Thubalethu Phaku, received the Sportsman of the year, and dedicated the award to his late wife. The Netball team were popular the Team of the Year award.

More than 14 awards, including the Lifetime Achievement award, were handed out on the evening, with awardees receiving medals, trophies and DUT Sports Blazers. Receiving the Lifetime Achievement award, Craig Denhill said “Thank you very much for recognizing me, I’m proud to wear the university colours.”

In the National Representation of the Year category, athletes Shane Victor, Puseletso Dladla, and Thubalethu Phaku received awards. Bongiwe Msomi and Fezeka Gambushe received awards for netball.

The Provincial Representation award went to Ayanda Lididi. In the Special Performances, for Philani Msomi won the award for Karate while Boniswa Duma, Ricardo Joao and Bryon Kariko received Kung Fu awards.
