DUT Hosts Windows Boot Camp

The Durban University of Technology Information Technology (academic) Department recently hosted the Windows 8 Development Workshop which also saw the attendance of IT programmers employed outside of the university.

Microsoft tutored the technology enthusiasts as well as DUT students about the exciting and “easy to use” new operating system that is intended to work equally well on portable touch screen devices and on desktop PCs that use a keyboard and mouse.

“There have been a lot of changes in the past few months especially to Windows which is why we call it ‘Windows Imagined’. Microsoft Windows 8 brings great opportunities to the market. It will elude. You will have to relearn everything you know,” said the Microsoft tutor.

Windows 8 is the upcoming Microsoft version that follows Windows 7. The new radical design begins at the Start page which features a new Metro-style interface consisting of square tiles, each representing an application. The Metro-style interface allows for the user to flip quickly through the applications they want. The Metro-style applications are also able to communicate with each other and share information using “contracts”.

Windows 8 is said to have been invented to challenge Apple Inc.’s iPad that tablets running on Google Inc.’s Android have failed to be. It is also said that Dell Inc. is hoping that it appeals to its installed base of business buyers, spurring them to upgrade the desktops in their workplaces.

“Open the application, move away from it and it doesn’t close but remains in suspended mode. Imagine you can play and a game on your PC and resume or carry it over on your mobile or tablet device as long as they have the same account. Another amazing thing is the interactivity. You can put your hand on the application and move it around. The movement is fluid, you can drag and drop it anywhere you want,” said the Microsoft tutor.

Windows 8 is expected to be available on the market later this year.
