DUT Interior design Students Refurbish City Campus

The My Campus project, an initiative aimed at designing and revamping public spaces of the DUT City Campus, officially started this week (Monday 28, January 2013).

The project involves second and third-year students in the Interior Design Programme who have been tasked with thinking of creative ways to improve the appearance of the staff and student courtyards as well as the canteen area. Additionally, the students will have to source their own sponsorship for the refurbishment.

The project is the brainchild of Faculty of Arts and Design Executive Dean Dr Kenneth Netshiombo.

Michelle Hankinson, a Lecturer in the Interior Design Programme said ‘like many of the staff and students at City Campus he (Dr Netshiombo) believes that the public spaces are in dire need of an injection of creativity. At present, they (the public spaces) are lifeless and dreary and in no way reflect the dynamic and artistic personalities that make the faculty what it is.’

The refurbishment of these areas will therefore restore vibrancy on campus. “This project will make the campus beautiful and attractive. You know a magnificent environment is conducive to studying”, said third-year student Ndabezinhle Ncube.

Another third-year student, Nkululeko Nzuza added that the campus will also be attractive to visitors.

The My Campus project will run until Friday (8 February 2013).
