DUT Midlands Campus Celebrates June 16

South Africa will commemorate June 16 tomorrow, a day about celebrating the youth’s contribution in South Africa’s liberation struggle.

The Indumiso Student Housing Department recently commemorated this day, which will be officially celebrated tomorrow (Saturday). The event was held on the June 9 2012 at the Indumiso Sport Centre.

Mbokodo Mbatha, Indumiso Student Housing Department Residence Life Officer said the event was initiated by the Indumiso Campus Residence Assistants and House Committees. “The aim was to reflect on the gains we currently enjoy as a result of the efforts of the youth in 1976 and analyse the present in order to design a meaningful future,” said Mbatha.

The celebrations were held under the theme From The Red-Blooded Mountains To Red Carpet The Struggle Continues”.

Khetha Mngadi, Indumiso Student Housing Manager emphasised the importance of continuous engagement around issues affecting young people as well as society as a whole.

The audience was entertained by a drama performance, dance and poetry. The programme was structured in a debate form. Panelists from clubs and societies debated under the topic Our brothers and sisters suffered a great loss of lives for our freedom. Are we now enjoying the benefits or still fighting?.

Also present in the debate was Sandile Phakathi, President of the South African Union of Students (SAUS).

Roby Mkhize, IDP Manager at Msunduzi Municipality gave the keynote address. He said differences that exist among race group should be understood as being as a result of apartheid, adding that the wrongs created by the past must be corrected.
