DUT Open Week a Success

DUT Open Week a Success

Pupils from different schools in KwaZulu-Natal poured into the Durban University of Technology during Open Week to learn more about what the University offers in terms of further study.

School teachers used the event as an opportunity to teach their pupils about life beyond their classrooms.

Khanyisile Zikakala, a Geography teacher at Bhande High School, Ladysmith, said Open Week is great opportunity for her pupils to learn about the many opportunities available after matric.

“We come from a deep rural area where a girl is taken out of school to get married and they are ok with it because they do not know any better. Pupils are not exposed to this kind of life where we come from, but an opportunity like this exposes them to another life and they get to learn that life does not end in matric,” said Zikalala.

Ronnie Harriparsadh, an Afrikaans and Life Orientation teacher at Umbilo Secondary School brought 224 of his pupils to Open Day. “An opportunity like this shows pupils that you do not have to be good in Maths and Physics to study further, there are other careers available to different people”, said Harriparsadh.

While some of his pupils were worried about financing their studies at tertiary level, they walked away having received information about NSFAS.
