DUT Pays Tribute To Women This August

Honouring and acknowledging the significance of women was the agenda at the annual Women’s Day event at the Mansfield Hall, Ritson Campus on August, 13, 2014.

The event was hosted by the Student Counselling and Health Department under the theme ‘Women of Honour and Wisdom’ which was a great success. The event celebrated women from all walks of life.

Student Counselling and Health Department Psychologist, Robyn-Leigh Smith, opened the event with a tribute to the women of 1956.
“In August 1956 women, marched to the Union Buildings, not to fight each other but to empower one another for the liberation of their rights,” said Smith.

Among the audience was also former DUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Institutional Support Professor Nqabomzi Gawe, who delivered a gripping speech on challenges in the advancement of gender equity in society. Prof Gawe referred to some of the stereotypes and cultural norms that women are accustomed to.

“Society still believes that when a man speaks a woman should be quiet and that a woman’s place is in the kitchen. Although the South African constitution gives women equal status to men, acknowledgement of a women’s status indeed refers to certain circumstances and places only,” she said.

Chairperson of the DUT Gender Forum, Ranilla Pillay, enlightened the audience on the importance of respect and gave a few pointers on how young women should conduct themselves.
“Empower yourself make yourself a better human being through education. If you respect yourself, the world will respect you,” she said.

The audience were then treated to poetry by Sindi Sibisi and Aphiwe Dlamini as well as a drama performance by the Sinamandla Performing Arts group. Each of the performances emphasised the important role that women play in society and also reassured women that their hard work does not go unnoticed.

Audience members were also given an opportunity to win amazing prizes.
