DUT Students’ Jewellery To Feature On Morning Live

They have mesmerised the Durban public and now exclusive jewellery pieces from the Hidden Gem Exhibition, featuring works by Durban University of Technology’s BTech and third-year Jewellery Design and Manufacture students, will bedazzle the rest of South Africa when they are broadcast on Morning Live on SABC 2 this Saturday (2 June 2013).

The Hidden Gem Exhibition opened at the DUT Art Gallery, Steve Biko Campus on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Dazzling jewellery items such as rings, earrings and necklaces are currently still on sale. The items were all crafted using sterling silver but each piece is unique, with finishing touches of wood, gemstones and enamel. The designs were inspired by fauna and flora spotted during trails through the Palmiet Nature Reserve in Westville, Durban.

Upon hearing about the exhibition, Morning Live Producer Swazi Vilakazi said she was intrigued and immediately made arrangements to cover this story as part of the weekly Morning Live Art Bulletin. So, on Wednesday afternoon, the cameras were rolling at the DUT Art Gallery in Durban.
“What I found most interesting about the exhibition is that designs draw inspiration from fauna and flora spotted during trails through the Palmiet Nature Reserve in Westville. I was interested to see how these look like,” she said.

The insert will feature an interview conducted with DUT Art Gallery Curator Francesca Verga with some cutaways showing the jewellery pieces in the gallery. It will be broadcast between 07H40 and 07H50 during the show’s seven-minute art bulletin.

Vilakazi explained that as an arts and culture focus magazine current affairs programme, broadcasting art related stories is at the heart of the show. By covering this jewellery exhibition, the show is trying to add variety to the content of the art bulletin.

The collaborative exhibition is presented by non-profit organisation ARROWSA, the Durban University of Technology’s Fine Art and Jewellery Design Department, the Centre for Communication, Media & Society (CCMS) at UKZN and Bechet High School in Sydenham.

Proceeds from the sale of jewellery will go towards funding for a small group of ARROWSA-Bechet learners to attend the 2013 Indra (International Development of the Arts for Reconciliation) Global Congress in Derry, UK. The global congress will be an opportunity for groups of young people from existing and potential Indra centres to come together and share their practice, ideas and experience.

The exhibition closes on Friday June 7, 2013 at 15h00.
