DUT athlete shines at World Athletic Championship in Korea

Durban University of Technology athlete Shane Victor has played an important part in the South African athletic team that won a silver medal in the 4 x 400m men’s relay at the World Athletic Championship in Daegu, Korea. He gave the team the fantastic start and contributed to a great team effort. He previously won a gold medal for being the fastest athlete in the 400 metre track in Cape Town.

Victor is a final year student in the Faculty of Arts and Design at DUT. He runs for the University’s Athletic Club. Two weeks ago, he was part of the South African students’ team that won a bronze medal in the 4X400m relay in the World Student Games in Shenzen,China.

Victor won a gold medal in the 400 metre event at the South African Student Athletics Championships, which he completed in 46.15 seconds. His performance at the South African Student Athletics Championships allowed him to qualify for the South African Squad that participated in China last month.

Previously interviewed on his performance, Victor, from Westville in Durban, said: “It’s amazing to get the first place and win gold in this game. My dream is to do 400 metres in 45 seconds in China and carry it to the Olympics. I am very happy that I am getting closer to reaching my main goal of making it to the top 3 and be part of the SA Team to the Olympics. I want to dedicate the whole year to training for my professional athletic career in the next few years.”

He has run and competed in many athletic games in the last four years including SA Seniors race in Durban where he obtained a third place and a bronze medal. In the Yellow Pages race he placed second and he came second in the Interprovincial Yellow Pages in Bellville, Cape Town. He has received a few gold medals in athletics.

Victor’s interest in athletics started at a young age in school and he is following in his parents’ footstep’s with his passion in running for leisure.

The World Athletic Championship ended on Sunday, 4 September 2011.
