DUT graduates over 800 students during Spring graduation

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is proud to announce that it will graduate over 800 students during the Spring graduation ceremony taking place on Thursday, 8 September 2011 at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre, Steve Biko Campus, Durban. All qualifications will be awarded in different fields in the six faculties of the University. Five candidates will receive doctor of technology degrees adding to a cohort of knowledgeable scholars of the University. DUT Chancellor, Ms Ela Gandhi and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmed Bawa will confer degrees and diplomas on graduates who have worked tirelessly over the years to attain their qualifications.

Keynote address by Professor Salim S. Abdool Karim
Professor Salim S. Abdool Karim will be the keynote speaker at the Spring graduation ceremony at Durban University of Technology on 8 September 2011. Professor Abdool Karim is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Director of Centre for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA).

He is also a Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Columbia University and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Cornell University, New York. He was co-Principal Investigator of the CAPRISA 004 trial of tenofovir gel which provided proof of concept that the antiretroviral drug, tenofovir, can prevent sexually transmitted HIV infection in women. He was involved in the development, as patent co-inventor, of clade C HIV vaccines and subsequently led the first HIV vaccine trial in South Africa.

His clinical research on TB-HIV treatment has impacted on and continues to shape the clinical management of co-infected patients. Professor Abdool Karim is a Member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV, a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPfAR), a Member of the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on “Envisioning a strategy to prepare for the long-term burden of HIV/AIDS” and serves as a Member of the Strategic Advisory Board of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise.
