DUT hosts International Seminar on Diaspora Pravasi Barathiya Divas Africa 2010

On the 1st of October the Durban University of Technology hosted the Pravasi Barathiya Divas Academic Seminar Africa which was intended to give opportunities for engagement, co-operation and collaboration amongst the diaspora. This was also to acknowledge 150 years of contribution of Indian South Africans to South Africa. The event was held at DUT’s Hotel School, Ritson campus.

The theme of the seminar was the Indian Diaspora in Africa. This seminar discussed challenges and opportunities in engaging diaspora communities in formal peace building processes. Some of the ideas that were discussed included diaspora as a resource under globalization, the bond that India and Africa have built over the years and their involvement in the struggle for liberation, and the concept of global identity.

DUT’s Chancellor Ms Ela Gandhi; Prof Ajay Dubey, Director of African Studies at the School of International Studies – Jawaharl Nehru University of New Delhi and Ms Y Bacus from the Department of Community Service with the Government of KwaZulu Natal were some of the guests present at the seminar.

Acknowledgements were accorded to DUT’s International office, Co-operative education and Corporate Affairs for organising the event.
