DUT stand at Eskom exhibition

The Durban University of Technology was represented at the Eskom exhibition anniversary celebrations held at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Westville campus recently.

The idea behind the event was to bring all institutions and organisations funded by Eskom to form part of Eskom’s 90th anniversary celebrations. DUT was amongst other institutions in collaboration with Eskom on research projects by students funded by Eskom.

After many years of collaboration, in 2002, the Real Time Power System Centre (RTPSS) was established at DUT Steve Biko campus subsequently launched in 2004.

For displaying DUT ‘s work, the Department of Power Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment staff led by Senior Director in Engineering; Mr Frederick D’Almaine were at the event showcasing in part of the digital simulation system. The system boosts with 10 real-time digital simulators, as well as a single –rack portable real –time digital simulator.

Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises; Mr Bulelani Magwanishe, Deputy Mayor of eThekwini Municipality; Councillor Nomvuso Tshabalala and the Chief Executive Officer of Eskom; Mr Brian Dames got a chance to stop next to the DUT stand during the walkabout. The Deputy Minister was encouraged by the news that a single-rack simulator can accommodate Eskom networks of up to 18 three phase busbars.

Logan Pillay, Manager for Eskom Academy of Learning (EAL) couldn’t hide his excitement to see all the institutions and organisation showcasing their research project.

“As part of Eskom’s 90th anniversary we showcasing research projects funded by us. We are proud this year we are having learners exhibiting here,” said Pillay.

The colourful event offered DUT the opportunity to be recognised, since there was necessary information about DUT, faculty brochures which also help to attract more students and parents.
