DUT students score for charity

Battling each other on the football and netball pitch, DUT students raised funds for charity in a tournament held at Curries Fountain and Steve Biko campus on recently.

The atmosphere was undeniably competitive as the 16 football and six netball teams were up against each other to raise funds for an NGO called ‘Talent Is Never Enough.’

In addition to participating in the competitive playoffs, the teams independently paid a joining fee prior to the event to aid the organisation that aims to develop sports in rural areas around KwaZulu-Natal.

Seeking help from the higher power, an opening prayer was the perfect remedy to cure nerves as teams pleaded for assistance during the stimulating matches held at Curries Fountain and Steve Biko.

The winning teams received medals and trophies sponsored by eThekwini Municipality, Gold Sports Management and Mlindazwe and Umzulu.
Bongiwe Msomi who is national Netball team captain and Litha Nxabi, a DUT Sports Management Science Alumni and Golden Arrows player each donated their previous kits as souvenirs to the event.

Kwazi Dlamini, a second year Journalism student and event coordinator, was thrilled that the event came together after days of preparation and anticipation.

After much deliberation, Seaboard residence was crowned the netball champions after a 22- 16 defeat against Berea residence, and in soccer, Alpine won 5-4 by penalties against Gladdington.

Cebisa Doda, a second year Sports Management Science student and Chairperson of the residence sports committee said, “The teams gave off their best and the best team won. I’m happy with the overall results of the tournament and I’m also grateful that the school gave us an opportunity to give back to the community while having fun and keeping physically fit.”
