Dimensions In Space Exhibition At The DUT Art Gallery

Dimensions in Space, an exhibition by second-year Fine Art and Jewellery Design students at the Durban University of Technology, is currently on at the DUT Art Gallery, Steve Biko Campus.

The exhibition opened last week Wednesday (June 12, 2013). Art fanatics who visit the art gallery will be in for a visual treat with student works including sculptures, ceramics and jewellery items on display.

This exhibition forms part of the Fine Art and Jewellery Design Department’s Work-Integrated Learning programme. The artworks, although exhibited simultaneously, differ in their themes. The Jewellery Design students manufactured their works using sterling silver, drawing inspiration from nature and indigenous plants whilst the Fine Art Sculpture students incorporated urban life into their work, using various objects that are found in and around the city of Durban. Fine Art students in the Ceramics programme created wall hangings from porcelain, terracotta and raku fired clay.

As this is the second year class’ debut exhibition, DUT Art Gallery Curator Francesca Verga said students worked together with her in preparation for this. “The students helped with carrying the artworks into the gallery as well as assisting with the exhibition layout and hanging of the work. They also came up with the name of the exhibition,” she said.

According to Verga, the word ‘dimensions’ in Dimensions in Space refers to the three different disciplines of art that are featured in the gallery while “space” refers to the size of objects and the gallery space.

The exhibition ends on Thursday, June 20, 2013.
