East Coast Radio hosts live show at DUT

Pedicures, spring fashion, flip-flops and street basketball were the highlights of the first ever East Coast Radio (ECR) campus throw-down held live at Durban University of Technology’s Steve Biko campus last week.

Students and local fans of the popular KwaZulu-Natal radio station, undeterred by the scorching sun, made their way to the Fred Crookes Sports Centre basketball court just to get a glimpse of their favourite ECR djs and radio personalities in action. It was ‘toes’ out for DUT ladies who took advantage of the free pampering session of manicures and pedicures which were being done at the event, all thanks the ECR team.

The director of the Confucius Institute at DUT, Dr Eddie Chaobo Fu, had the wonderful opportunity to feature on the show with Zaba Simbine where he spoke about the introduction of mandarin courses at DUT and even taught Zaba a few mandarin phrases live on air. Students thoroughly enjoyed ECR’s outreach on campus, mingling with the crew who were very keen to talk about possible employment opportunities that could be available at the radio station.

Thobeka Ngcobo, first year Public Relations student at DUT and fan of ECR said, “It’s interesting to see ECR live on our campus. This is such a good idea and it would be wonderful if we could have this type of interaction more often in the future.”

The campus throw-down got even more exciting when ECR All-Stars basketball team took on DUT’s Wolves while students cheered on the sidelines of the basketball court. The Wolves showed no mercy beating ECR All Stars 88-42 during the friendly match.

ECR’s producer, Jason McCall said he was excited to experience the high energy and positive vibes that the students showed throughout the day. “It’s so nice to see youngsters that are so interactive, passionate and most of all, are listening to our radio station. We came to have fun and bond with our community and it was very successful. We know DUT is a world class academic institution and the cheering of students all over campus reminded me of my wonderful campus days,” he said nostalgically.

A second campus throw-down with ECR is already on the cards for DUT. McCall said his crew would be keen to challenge DUT in other sporting codes such as cricket, rugby or boxing and hopefully win the next time they compete with DUT. He also hopes to continue the collaboration with DUT on a more regular basis and perhaps even find time to do the mandarin short course at the Confucius Institute.
