Faculty of Applied Sciences Goes To The Durban Business Fair

The Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS) flew the DUT flag high at the recent Durban Business Fair held at the Durban Exhibition Hall.

Over 500 businesses from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa exhibited at the three day event. The Fair was the fifteenth exhibition organised by the eThekwini Municipality and is intended to provide KZN business with the opportunity to showcase their goods and services. Originally known as the Small Business Fair, the event has grown to include any business trading within KZN.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences exhibits at the Durban Business Fair to promote their support for business in KZN as well as to cultivate interest in small business and entrepreneurship amongst students and staff. Due to the success of their stand in 2012, this year the Faculty took three adjacent stands.

Staff and students from Biotechnology and Food Technology, Chemistry, Maritime Studies, Clothing Management, Food and Nutrition, Horticulture and Sport Studies programmes manned the stand over the three day weekend and, apart from interacting with the varied multitude of visitors at the stand, also networked with other stand holders.

Roz Havenga, Associate Director in the Clothing and Textiles Studies Department who represented the Faculty, said the major aim behind exhibiting at the Fair is to proactively showcase what FAS and DUT have to offer both in formal qualifications and business support services. In addition, the aim is to meet people who can offer DUT students work integrated learning (WIL) placements or career opportunities as well as involve staff in industry-based teaching and learning projects.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to promote our knowledgeable, dedicated and passionate students and staff in the public arena,” said Havenga.
