The Durban University of Technology’s Department of Fashion and Textiles will hold its annual Fashion Show from 12-14 October at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre on the Steve Biko Campus in Durban. The coveted event will showcase the designs of 40 third-year students, with the best 20 ranges featured on Friday, 14 October.

This year’s show themed Genomorph focuses on the genetic morphosis of the designer. Students were tasked to put together a cohesive collection of six fully accessorised garments that is reflective of their personal development, style and character. The 2011 show boasts an eclectic range from avant-garde to commercial clothing.

Fashion and Textile HOD, George Vorster said: “This year’s theme was open to self interpretation, it involved experimental design and rigorous research. Morphosis is a Greek term, meaning to form or be in formation. It is a highly appropriate representation of our third year students, who have experienced a transition in their style, character and in their personal development as a designer.”
“More importantly, designers are continuously in morphosis, developing and adapting new creative ideas. The end product of their multi-influential designs redefines their identity. Morphosis is a dynamic and evolving process and in essence, so is fashion. Fashion has multiple influences and through the different eras we have seen elements of social, cultural, political, environmental and technological adaptations and influences in style and design.”

Vorster said, ultimately Genomorph redefines the self and is a presentation of aesthetic designs that engages with contemporary society and culture through design and education. Designs will feature various techniques, a mixture of fabrics and colour, while drawing on the theme.

This year’s panel of judges will include established designers from the local fashion industry. Sponsored prizes will be awarded to the best designers of the Most Innovative Range, Most Commercial Range, Best Range on Show, Best Technical Range and Best Menswear Range.

Fashion and Textile lecturer, Meena Bagwandin said: “The annual fashion show is a celebrated event that showcases our latest talent. It affords students exposure and is a great opportunity to rise to the challenge of meeting the design brief, culminating in a fusion of colour, tones, various design elements, personal style and exceptional skills and quality.”

Tickets cost R50 and will be available at the door and through Computicket.
