Today (Thursday, July 18, 2013) marks 95 years since the birth of world-renowned struggle hero and former South African President, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

Tata, as he is affectionately known, was born in Mvezo, Transkei. Along with many other activists, he was instrumental during the fight against the apartheid regime – a role that ultimately led to his 27-year stay in jail. He was eventually released from prison on February 11, 1990.

In 1994, Mandela was sworn in as the first president of South Africa, which was now a democracy. He is idolised worldwide for his stern views on peace and reconciliation.

From the Durban University of Technology, we say Happy Birthday Tata. Always remember that millions of people, around the country, across the continent and throughout the world admire, love and respect you.
