Hidden Gem Exhibition Set To Enchant

An evening of eco sparkle awaits guests to the upcoming ARROWSA/DUT Jewellery Exhibition.

The exhibition opens tomorrow (Tuesday, May, 28, 2013) at the DUT Art Gallery, Steve Biko Campus, at 17h30 for 18h00.

Jewellery Design & Manufacture students of DUT will mesmerise art lovers with their intricate creations influenced by the theme, Hidden Gem. Designs draw inspiration from fauna and flora spotted during trails through the Palmiet Nature Reserve in Westville, Durban.

Jewellery such as earrings, rings and necklaces made of sterling silver will be on sale. Pieces are embellished with wood, gemstones and enamel. Student designers include third year students Slindile Mbelu, Chantal Benson, Vusi Xaba and Ayanda Myeza, as well as BTech students Carlo Assumption, Lloyd Moodley and Zuki Xulu, amongst others.

The collaborative exhibition is presented by ARROWSA, Fine Art and Jewellery Design at the Durban University of Technology, CCMS (Centre for Communication, Media & Society) at UKZN and Bechet High School, Sydenham. ARROWSA – Art, Culture & Heritage for Peace is a voluntary non-profit organisation in South Africa. The programme seeks to join people as individuals, from organisations and institutions, and from all over the world in art projects and face-to-face meetings that break down barriers, and promote conflict resolution and reconciliation, and understanding.

Proceeds from the sale of jewellery will go towards funding for a small group of ARROWSA-Bechet learners to attend the 2013 Indra Global Congress in Derry UK. The global congress will be an opportunity for groups of young people from existing and potential Indra (International Development of the Arts for Reconciliation) centres to come together and share their practice, ideas and experience.

“We hope to achieve this by sharing our stories, challenging prejudice and stereotypes, and developing the arts as a resource for reconciliation and the creative transformation of conflict,” said ARROWSA chairperson, Mary Lange.

The exhibition closes on Friday June 7, 2013 at 15h00. Safe parking is available at the Steve Biko Campus, Gate 2.
