Highlighting the Significance of Women

Women’s month ended on a positive note at DUT after the University’s Gender Forum hosted a Women’s Day workshop titled: Women of Worth, at the Steve Biko Campus before the month (August) ended.

The event was organised by the DUT Gender Forum in partnership with EAP (Employee Assistant Programme) within Human Resource Management at the University.

The workshop aimed to make women aware of how far they have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development as well as to empower them with regards to their daily concerns.

Self defence lessons facilitated by Timmy Singh were first on the agenda. Singh gave the audience essential tips on the psychology of self defence and how to defend oneself in cases of emergency.

Psychiatrist, Dr Zerisha Bodasing, enlightened guest about female psychology and balancing female roles. “Studies have revealed that family and work are the two most important domains for women. Balancing these two roles is what women strive for. More women are entering previously male dominated places of work and studies have found that women tend to be more involved on the job than males”, she said.

EAP specialist, Samantha Rajcoomar, said the workshop highlighted the purpose and significance of Women’s Day. “The event relayed meaningful facts and inspired employees to think more deeply about women issues and challenges. Women gathered to discover their values, purpose, strength and boundaries”, she said.

The guests were then indulged to poetry and music, with each performance depicting the importance of women and reassuring self worth.
