IT Award Ceremony A Success

IT Award Ceremony A Success

Qualifications in Information Technology and Financial Information Systems at the Durban University of Technology held their annual award ceremony where 29 students were awarded for their hard work and dedication academically.

The award ceremony was held at the Ritson Campus Tutorial Block on Friday (September, 25, 2013).

Qiniso Mazubane, DUT graduate, founder and CEO of NDIZA Information Systems, was the guest speaker at the ceremony. He encouraged students to always aim for more, urging them to never become comfortable but to challenge their capabilities and always yearn for more.

“A vision is made of goals and one should work tirelessly in order to reach those goals. I believe that a vision cannot simply be attained. One has to spend their life trying to achieve it”, said Mazubane.

This year, the Special Achievement award went to second-year IT student Gift Mokoena who was announced as having shown major improvement in his academic results.

The highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of the Diplomate of the Year award to DUT Financial Information Systems BTech student Given Komane and Joshua Dhanapalan, who is also pursuing his BTech studies in IT at DUT. The Diplomate of the Year award is given to candidates who obtained the highest overall distinction result over all three years of study towards the diploma qualification. Komane received 18 distinctions during her three years of study towards her diploma studies while Dhanapalan got 21 distinctions during his during three years of study towards his diploma. Both students were awarded with iPads, floating trophies which they get to keep until next year’s awards, a trophy, book vouchers courtesy of Adams Booksellers and Stationers and memory sticks. Komane’s iPad awarded courtesy of Aviva Systems while Dhanapalan’s iPad was sponsored by alBaraka Bank.

While Komane found it easy to obtain her results, she believes that “exams are not the only determining factor when aiming to achieve top marks”. She said assignments, tests and exams all contribute collectively. The love of her career choice (Financial Information Systems) is what mainly drives this young graduate to succeed.

The journey for Dhanapalan was however different as he found IT extremely challenging. “I am delighted about the award and I will gladly say that I have achieved because of a passion for what I do,” he said, adding that developing programs is his first love.

Both students are now looking to find employment in the industry.
Prinavin Govender, a lecturer in the IT programme encouraged students to be open minded and grateful to their lecturers for the time and dedication that they contributed towards their academic prosperity, adding that if former students such as Mazubane could make it, nothing should stop them.
