Undergraduate students registered for a B Tech in Nursing Science at DUT’s Indumiso Site are expected to do experiential learning in the community as part of their Community Based Education.

The nursing students allocated at Copesville decided to hold a soccer tournament and the theme for the day was ‘Lifestyle changes through sports’. Sports helps to promote health in various ways. The community showcased various forms of talents in the form of traditional dance, netball and soccer.

It was a very chilly day but the Copesville sports ground was full. There were seven soccer teams that competed. The event was a great success. Copesville councilor, Mrs Thandi Makhathini welcomed the students and she went all out to support the event. Besides soccer there were dance groups that entertained spectators during breaks organised by Councilor Makhathini. Dr Nokuthula Sibiya expressed gratitude to the Counselor for assisting with organising food and fruit for the community members and the players.

The students were excited to see their Head of Department, Dr Nokuthula Sibiya on the sports-field! The lecturers were there to support the students, and the day was enjoyed by all who attended. For those interested in sports, the Indumiso soccer players won and the netball girls lost.

The nursing students wish to extend gratitude to Counselor Makhathini and to the Copesville community at large. Thanks also go to the students who were not allocated to Copesville but supported their fellow students on the day. Trophies, shorts for training and bibs were donated by KwaZulu-Natal Sports and Recreation Department and medals were donated by nursing students.
