Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture

Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture

The Durban University of Technology’s Journalism department in collaboration with the Gandhi Development Trust hosted an insightful media lecture in commemoration of world-renowned peace maker and activist, Mahatma Gandhi on 1 March.

Delivering the keynote address this year at City Campus’s Arthur Smith Hall was Advocate Anil Kumar Nauriya, whose topic revolved around Gandhi and the founders of the African National Congress. In his lecture Adv Nauriya explored the close relations that existed between Gandhi and the founding members of the ruling party, namely John Langalibalele Dube, Doctor Walter Rubusana and Dr Pixley ka Seme.

From his lecture, one gathered that the chief motive of the ANC founders was to impart and promote education in the African community. Gandhi shared similar sentiments.

The restrictive laws against the Indian and African communities prompted the famous Satyagraha campaign, a notion defined as nonviolence, which Adv Nauriya said was commended by Dube in Ilanga lase Natal in the early 1900s and later acknowledged in the Lesotho journal, the Naledi. “Gandhi’s views were respected by politicians. Dr Pixley Seme’s junior would consult with Gandhi in Seme’s absence,” Adv Nauriya said.

Commenting on the current political state, Faculty of Arts and Design Executive Dean Dr Kenneth Netshiombo expressed great disappointment saying “if politicians respected the truth, South Africa would be a better country.”

Adv Nauriya (59) hails from Delhi, India. He currently works as a Counsel at the Supreme Court of India and the High Court of Delhi. A proactive man, Adv Nauriya has lectured in the Indian institute of Public Administration, has been a member of countless bodies including the governing body of the National Gandhi Museum in New Delhi and worked as Assistant Editor for The Times of India, based in New Delhi, from 1979 to 1982. He has delivered many lectures across the globe.
