Minister Blade Nzimande Visits DUT To Engage With Students

The Durban University of Technology was visited by Dr Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education and Training yesterday (Monday 1 October 2012).
Dr Nzimande’s visit followed an invitation by the University’s Students Representative Council (SRC) to engage with students on “Economic, Academic, Political and Social Challenges Facing South African Students”.
DUT Vice Chancellor Professor Ahmed Bawa who was the guest speaker at the event said DUT was honoured to host the Minister. “When I got the proposal for this meeting, I was happy because I wanted to hear what the Minister had to say on the topic and the future for higher education,” said Professor Bawa.
Dr Nzimande said he was honoured to be at DUT, saying it is always a pleasure to get involved with students because our universities are important. He said there will always be challenges affecting students, especially student leaders.
“The main problem that we face is the lack of knowledge of context, which is why many young people go astray and this is why students’ movements were formed. The student movement needs to make sure that the needs of students are met. We also need to ensure that we work together as students, help one another academically and that no student on campus goes hungry,” said Dr Nzimande.
He said his Department and government are working towards the improvement of the country’s universities. “We have also heard the concern of students regarding the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), the problem of no funding for BTech students. We as government are working on it,” said Dr Nzimande responding to questions the students had for him.
Mzamo Khanyile, DUT SRC President, commended DUT students on their good behavior throughout the year, urging them to vote for their next SRC. Voting started today (2 October 2012) until Thursday (4 October 2012).
In closing, Professor Bawa wished students well on their year-end exams. “This is the final term, let us do well,” he said.
