Presentation on sleeping disorders

Dr Ingrid Couchman presented findings of a groundbreaking research on ‘Chronic primary insomnia: the efficacy of the homoeopathic simillimum’, at the 2nd Annual Neurotalk conference in Dalian, China in May this year. It was previously presented at the Liege Homeopathic conference in Mexico and it was later published in the Homoeopathy Journal. Dr Couchman lectures in Homeopathy at the Durban University of Technology.

“We looked at each individual patient with chronic insomnia and gave them an individualized homoeopathic treatment specific to them rather than to the disease. The study was found to be effective in that people had more sleep hours per week on the treatment,” said Dr Couchman.

Dr Couchman explained that the basic concept of the study was that 30 people were seen for a homoeopathic consultation and a specific remedy for them was prescribed. She said the patients were then seen at 2 week intervals for a month and they recorded their hours slept in a Sleep Diary and their perceptions on their sleep quality on a Sleep Impairment Index. “The research showed significant improvement in the treatment group in comparison to the placebo group,” she said.

She said it was a good experience as it was a medical conference with neurologists, neuro-surgeons and neuro-physicians from all over the world in attendance. She believes this is good exposure for homoeopathy in general as the allopathic field is usually quite skeptical. She noted that the delegates were very interested to learn more about Homoeopathy, especially because she was the only person from South Africa present. She is convinced there is a great scope for DUT Homeopathy to get recognition if they further take part in more medically orientated conferences as this which can then spread homoeopathy and DUT’s reputation to a far greater audience.
