Pupils Continue to Pour in at Open Week

In its second day, Open Week at the Durban University of Technology did well with students from Durban and Pietermaritzburg visiting the campus during the morning and afternoon sessions.

“We host two sessions a day, to be able to accommodate all schools that come, to see what we have to offer and to lure students in. We have a lucky draw at the end of each session and they win a special DUT price”, said Student Recruitment Manager Rodney Maharaj.

Phumla Ntombela, a Banqobile High School pupil who won herself a DUT trolley bag was happy about her prize, adding that even though she is still in grade 11, she has learnt a lot and would love to study Quantity Surveying at the University.

The Department of Information Technology set up internet connected computers for students to make their presentation easy. “We set up this type of display to make an easier communication to the pupils about what IT requires. For those who are interested in IT, we register them on our database”, said DUT Senior Technician Rajesh Nepaul.

Hillgrove High School matric pupil Phila Radebe was very happy with the information he received at the Horticulture stand. “I love nature and the environment, if I don’t get to do Horticulture, Town Planning is my other option. I just want to work outside and not in an office”, said Radebe.

Henrika Sumbhooparsad, a Grade 11 student from Ferndale Combined High School enjoyed spending time at the Somatolgy stand, asking questions. “I have always had a passion for hair and make up and I can’t wait to finish school and start studying towards my dream”, he said.

Open week is hosting more schools until Saturday 28 July 2012.
