Same Differences, a New Dance Musical on Offer at DUT

Same Differences, a witty, colourful and funky dance-musical with original songs written by Angela Harvey who is a song writer, playwright, poet and lecturer will run at the DUT Courtyard Theatre from Friday (12 September 2014) to Thursday (18 September 2014).

The production also features amazing music by one of the UK’s finest bands, Celloman. Dance, choreographed by Mdu Mtshali and DUT third-year Drama Studies students, adds input that is spellbinding. Collectively, the play is a great example of multi-disciplinary arts working together.

Angela Harvey is a lecturer within the University’s Drama and Performance Studies Department, and an executive committee member of PANSA (Performing Arts Network of SA) KZN. This is her first production with the DUT students. Same Differences also features a cast of 20 second and third year Drama and Performance Studies students.

“Same Differences reminds us of our innocence and how it cuts through the complexities of life with simple reasoning. We follow the journey of two different children, Yiggy, who is literally a Yellow girl and Lil Red, a boy. They run away from home as they are looking for a place where they can play together.

This play appeals to children although the undertones and issues speak to adults. It raises issues of race and culture, and looks at how disease and tragedy unites people and establishes common bonds,” said Harvey.

“We also examine ways to heal the constant struggle between good and evil and in so doing, we soar between the different worlds on the journey to our soul; our origin. We find the cure to all disease through a new dance; a new blood, and the awakening of universal unity where three co-existing worlds manage to embrace their differences,” she said.

Tickets cost R40 per person. For more information and bookings, please contact the Departmental Secretary, Lebohang Sibisi on (031) 373 2194 or via e-mail at lebohangs@dut.ac.za
