Saturday Cinema by Trevoulin Govender

Durban University of Technology student Trevoulin Govender was inspired to work even harder after he graduated Cum Laude and received the Dean’s Merit Award for his National Diploma in Video Technology during the 2011 April graduation.

Govender is currently pursuing a Btech Degree qualification and is confident of success!

He launched “The Immersive Experience” – a cinema which is exclusively for DUT students and staff – on 30 June. The movies will be screened free of charge at 6pm every Saturday in the Video Technology Department’s BTech Lab until 18 August.

On introducing this genius initiative Govender said: “I wanted to try something completely new, something that has never been done before.”
From a selection of 28 classic films, compiled by Govender, only eight will be screened over an eight-week period . The audience chooses what it wants to see by voting on the official website (www.imex2012.info) before each screening. Every week will be dedicated to one of the following genres: Action, Horror, Comedy, Drama, Romance, Documentary, Television and Reality. The atmosphere you watch the film in is inspired by the genre. Govender will also treat the audience to popcorn and other refreshments each week.

When he was in matric, Govender produced a self documentary, titled Live to fight it, which focused on his last few months in high school and his friends. From then on, the BTech student knew he wanted to be a filmmaker.
Adding to his aspirations Govender wants to own a “chain of cinemas, which give an experience to the viewers and approach the way to watch films differently”. Although Govender’s initial intent with this cinema was to help with his studies and especially the research project, the positive response from the audience has motivated him to carry the idea further.
