DUT is proud to announce that Ms Shirlien Prithepaul has been chosen as a recipient of the National Excellence in Teaching and Learning Awards.

The awards are handed out by The Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA) and the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC).

DUT is honoured that Ms Prithepaul has been given such wonderful recognition as the university prides itself on the professionalism and dedication of its staff, the excellence of the academic programmes on offer and the continued commitment to research. She is one of five teachers in South Africa to receive the award this year and the only one from a University of Technology.

“I wish to acknowledge support from my children, my brother and his wife, and staff in department, especially my HOD, Mrs Pavitra Pillay and our senior lab technician Mrs Ranilla Pillay. Their unwavering support and belief in my practices has allowed me to continue reaching out to my students, and ensuring that I do what I am here to do, that is teach,” commented Sherlien.

The Award
An award of R30 000 and a certificate is awarded to successful candidates. Ms Prithepaul will be presented with her award at a special ceremony in Durban. Both the Director of the HEQC and the Chairperson of HELTASA will attend the ceremony.

Sherlien Prithepaul’s bio-profile:
Lecturer at the Durban University of Technology) since 2000
Based in the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Technology
Lectures in: Immunology and Microbiology
Passionate about teaching and helping students employ different and alternate ways of learning.
Makes use of games, role play and model building for assessment.
First lecturer in DUT to use card games as a learning tool.
