The Faculty of Health Sciences teamed up with the Aaron Beare Foundation and Non-Ferrous Metals Works and have sponsored a former student with voice activated software and electronic equipment.

The former Dental Technology student, Lihle Ngcobo sustained spinal injuries after a horrific taxi accident on 4 July 2010. She remains paralysed from the waist down and with partial use of her hands. After a year of treatment, she is hopeful that with continuous rehabilitation she may someday regain function of her hands.

During a visit to DUT, Lihle was treated to a get-together with her former classmates who prepared a special video of well wishes for her. The emotionally charged event also coincided with the handover of the sponsored equipment.

Speaking at the event, Lihle said: “I wish to thank all of you, it really warms my heart to see how much you guys care about me. It makes me feel that I was not just a student number at DUT. I am very thankful for the support you have showed me since the accident.”

Faculty of Health Sciences Deputy Dean, Greg Bass said: “DUT is a student-centered university, we care for the well-being of our students. We hope that you enjoy the benefits of the equipment and wish you a speedy recovery.”

Duduzile Ngcobo, Lihle’s mother said the equipment will aid in her development. She said: “Lihle is getting much better now, she is even starting to use her hands a little bit. I am happy and sad at the same time. Thank you to everyone for organising this and making it special for my daughter.”
