Students embark on community outreach drive with SAPS and Metro police

The Durban University of Technology’s Baltimore Residence will host a community sports day which is a programme initiated by students in partnership with the South African Police and Durban Metro Police in the Durban South Beach area. This is part of a community outreach programme for students. Participants include Umthombo Shelter for Street Children, South Beach Taxi Association, students living in Seaboard residence and other residences in the area belonging to other tertiary institutions.

The sporting event is aimed at uniting the community of Ward 26 in South Beach area which is mainly dominated by students from different tertiary institutions through sports while promoting underground talent. It also promotes healthy living among community in the area and creates an opportunity for the youth to showcase their talents. The sporting activities will include soccer, table soccer, poetry, music, gumboot dancing and dancing.

One of the organisers, Sanele Gubhela says it’s important to keep the youth busy and actively involved in sport to keep them away from any other acts of wrongdoing. He adds that it is uniting to see police interacting with members of the community at social level to dispel the perception that people hold about the law enforcement agencies of the country.
