FOUR leading KwaZulu-Natal personalities and events have been shortlisted in a media initiative to recognise the province’s top newsmakers. Readers of The Mercury are invited to participate by choosing the overall KZN Newsmaker of the Year from:

The Moses Mabhida Stadium and 2010 Fifa World Cup.
The celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in KZN in 1860.
KZN and Proteas cricket hero Hashim Amla.
National police commissioner Bheki Cele.
The new award is being organised by the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Journalism Advisory Board. It shortlisted the nominees from those it believed had most prominently made the headlines from June 2010 to June 2011. DUT vice-chancellor Ahmed Bawa said the initiative was to promote free speech and dialogue. The winner would be announced at a dinner on November 17. Readers may vote by post (Box 47549, Greyville, 4023 – marked “Newsmaker”), by e-mail (newsmaker@inl.co.za – note choice as 1, 2, 3 or 4, as listed above) or by SMS (which cost R2 each). SMS the number of your choice (1, 2, 3 or 4, as listed above) to 34382. Voting closes at noon on Thursday, November 10.
