Writing Competition for DUT Undergraduates

In line with promoting both academic and creative writing among students, DUT Writing Centres will be running a writing competition in September this year (2013). The competition is a student development initiative and all DUT undergraduates with passion for writing are eligible.

The competition is meant to honour and celebrate the life and achievements of the late literary great, Chinua Achebe, who played a germinal role in the founding and development of African literature.

The competition will be divided into three genres, namely short stories, poetry and essays (opinion pieces). The broad theme for the competition is Tradition and Modernity and the sub-themes that are as follows:
• Identity and self-representation
• Rural-urban divide
• Pan Africanism
• Colonial encounter and its consequences
• Post independent Africa
• Gender, culture and society
• Redefining traditional African culture

All you need to do in the first round of the competition is to submit, using your DUT4life e-mail account, a short story or an essay/opinion piece of not more than 500 words or a short poem not longer than one page (1.5 spacing, 12pt, Times New Roman). In your e-mail, kindly include your title, surname, full first name(s), programme, year/level, telephone or cell number and the sub-theme of your choice, title of the sample of your writing and the sample of your writing.
