Writing Roadshow – A Brilliant Success

Writing Roadshow – A Brilliant Success

Playing games is an integral part of stimulating your mind and allowing your creative juices to flow when it comes to writing.

Encouraging students to gain more experience in writing and having fun doing so was the aim of the Writing Centre’s Roadshow, which was held at the Steve Biko Campus on 20 March 2014.

Hundreds of students eagerly gathered to participate in stimulating crossword puzzles, word games and spelling quizzes. “Judging from the attendance figures, the roadshow was a resounding success. Close to 300 participants, mainly students enthusiastically participated in our games. More students know about our services, which are for free,” said DUT Writing Centre Co-ordinator, Dr Gift Mheta. “The mission of the Writing Centre is to enhance learning, improve and understand the reading and the writing processes in different disciplines by offering companionship to both students and staff,” he added.

Writing Centre tutors interacted with students throughout the day, informing them about the services offered for the betterment of their writing. The team of 18 tutors are senior students who have a passion for writing and have a strong interest in imparting their skills. Writing Centre tutor, Nkosinathi Luthuli said, “I encourage all students to come to the Writing Centre and make use of our invaluable service. We offer a friendly, comfortable environment for students to work in and we aim to guide and advise students in their writing.”

The Writing Centres, run under the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, Professor Nomthandazo Gwele, have been established at three Durban and two Pietermaritzburg campuses.

Five DUT Writing Centres:

• Steve Biko campus – Alan Pittendrigh Library – ground floor
• ML Sultan campus – BM Patel Library – second floor
• City campus – Room 124, first floor
• Indumiso campus – block 7

The next roadshow will be held at the Riverside Campus, Pietermaritzburg, on Thursday 29 May 2014 from 10h00 to 13h00. Come along and play fun word games and stand a chance to win wonderful prizes!
