A DOUBLE CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS AS TWIN SISTERS GRADUATE SIDE BY SIDE AT DUT

A DOUBLE CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS AS TWIN SISTERS GRADUATE SIDE BY SIDE AT DUT

The Ramphal twins demonstrated that everything is better as a pair, from going to preschool together to graduating on the same day at the Olive Convention Centre on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

Among the many adaptive graduates from Durban University of Technology (DUT)  who crossed the stage, one story stood out for its warmth and uniqueness that of twin sisters Dhiya and Rhiya Ramphal from Reservoir Hills, Durban, who celebrated not only completing their studies, but doing so together, side by side.

The identical twins both graduated with a Diploma in Management Accounting, walking across the stage one after the other in a moment that reflected years of shared effort, discipline, and an unbreakable bond. Their achievement symbolised more than academic success, it represented a journey built on unity, shared ambition, and lifelong companionship.

The two sisters from Reservoir Hill, shared that knowing they could rely on one another made the journey feel lighter and easier. Academic comprehension was also made easier by the twin arrangement, since one would assist the other if they understood better.

“Studying together is something that we always wanted to do. We planned to go together, study the same course in the same institution,” Rhiya explained. She added that their journey does not end here, as they are continuing their professional development through CIMA, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants..

Their time at DUT became more than just an academic journey, it turned into a shared daily experience of learning and growth. Instead of navigating the pressures of higher education alone, they relied on each other for academic support, emotional encouragement, and constant motivation.

“We would take breaks. If one of us didn’t understand something, the other would explain it. We also tested each other while studying, which made learning easier and more enjoyable,” they shared. This approach not only strengthened their understanding of course material but also made studying less overwhelming and more collaborative.

Their bond extended beyond the classroom into everyday university life. The twins explained that having each other present during lectures and campus life helped them adjust more easily to the demands of higher education.

“The good thing about being twins is that we are never alone during lectures. If I am sick, my twin will attend and come back and teach me, and I will do the same,” they said. This mutual support system became one of their greatest strengths throughout their studies.

Beyond academics, the sisters both embraced the values of the Durban University of Technology, with respect standing out as the principle they hold closest to their hearts.

“Everything starts with respect. It is something you are taught at home, and it goes a long way. We also respect each other and value each other’s opinions. Without respect, we would not be here today celebrating this huge milestone together,” they said.

Mr Roshan Ramphal, their father, conveyed his great joy and satisfaction with their achievement. He thanked them and mentioned that his twin’s shared schedule made it simple for him to drop them off and pick them up from campus because they travelled the same route.

“It has been very unique for them, and very enlightening as well. From high school they have always studied the same subjects. Even at university, they chose the same course. The journey was not bad because I would pick them after class at the same time and drop them home. As a parent, I am very proud of them,” he said.

He further added that education has become a growing legacy within the family, noting that their older brother is also a graduate of DUT. “It’s been a journey, but at least it has not stopped here. They are furthering their studies. We are extremely proud of them,” he said with pride.

Following the session, the institutional registrar, Dr Maditsane Nkonoane joined the Ramphal family to congratulate the twins for graduating, wishing them success and good fortune in their future endeavours.
