At the heart of his journey was his mother, whose constant encouragement, support, and strength carried him through every challenge and kept him focused on his goals despite the difficulties he faced.
Sipho Sazi Sibiya proudly graduated from Durban University of Technology (DUT) with a Diploma in Management Sciences in Operations Management under the Faculty of Management Sciences. He achieved Cum Laude at the 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
In 2023, he was admitted to a Diploma programme, and the transition from high school to university was not easy. However, he learned to adapt to the new environment and responsibilities. One of the biggest challenges he faced was living in residence, where he had to cook and clean for himself for the first time. Despite these difficulties, he remained determined to succeed.
He explained that during challenging moments, his mother’s words continued to echo in his mind: “You must focus on your studies and also engage with lecturers.” These words became a source of motivation and guidance throughout his academic journey.
From his first year until the completion of his studies, he carried his mother’s advice with him. By working hard, being persistent, and being committed, he was able to overcome obstacles and achieve academic excellence, eventually graduating Cum Laude.
“One of my greatest academic accomplishments was earning a Cum Laude pass. It was a representation of his commitment and effort as well as the sacrifices, courage, and drive that got me through challenging circumstances. Achieving Cum Laude demonstrated the value efforts after overcoming the difficulties of adjusting to university life, juggling duties in residence, and adjusting to freedom,” he explained.
When asked about the DUT living values that resonated with him the most, he mentioned transparency, honesty, and accountability. He explained that these values have shaped his character and will help him adapt successfully in the workplace. According to him, honesty in the workplace is more than simply telling the truth, it is about being trustworthy, reliable, and taking responsibility for one’s actions.
“My goal is to return to DUT to pursue my Advanced Diploma and eventually complete my master’s degree because the institution became a home away from home for me, I found people who genuinely care about students, from the support structures available to the services provided, which made life more convenient and comfortable,” Sibiya expressed.
Giving advice to first-year students, he said that students must first understand their background and remember what brought them to the institution. According to him, having a clear reason for being at university gives students direction and helps them stay focused on their goals. He believes that when students have a sense of purpose, they are more likely to overcome challenges and achieve success in their academic journey.
