The Durban University of Technology Executive Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Professor Oludayo Olugbara, has been appointed to serve on the Department of Small Business Development Research Ecosystem Committee. This appointment recognises his leadership and expertise in advancing the growth and sustainability of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
The Research Ecosystem Committee provides strategic research advisory support aimed at strengthening MSME development and improving coordination of South Africa’s national research agenda. In this role, Professor Olugbara will contribute to identifying priority research areas, addressing key gaps, and supporting the alignment of research efforts across different sectors.
He will also play a key role in fostering collaboration between government, academia and industry partners, strengthening the evidence base that informs policy and programme development within the Department of Small Business Development, and advancing innovation and knowledge sharing in the MSME sector. The Committee operates through structured engagements, including scheduled meetings and participation in thematic working groups focused on priority development areas.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor Research Innovation and Engagement, Professor Fulufhelo Nemavhola, congratulated Professor Olugbara on the appointment, describing it as a well-deserved recognition of his expertise and contribution to the field. He noted that it is encouraging to see DUT academics being called upon at a national level to support evidence-based policy development.
Professor Nemavhola also expressed confidence in Professor Olugbara’s ability to make a meaningful contribution to the Committee’s work and to represent the Durban University of Technology with distinction in this important national role.
Professor Olugbara’s appointment will remain in effect until 2029.
