A SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY OF THE SRC 2022/23 INDUCTION

A SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY OF THE SRC 2022/23 INDUCTION

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Student Governance held a successful first day of the four days of the 2022/23 Student Representative Council (SRC) Induction at Emakhosini Boutique Hall.

According to the Student Governance Manager, Mr Masiza Ngculu the SRC induction week is a period to make sure that the student leaders develop fruitful and healthy relationships with the University stakeholders in order to have an affluent term of office.

“This week we will bring different stakeholders from the University who will share what role and how their roles impact on the University operations. We would have loved to involve the entire university community but that is not ideal, however, we have sat down as Student Governance and identified the stakeholders who are crucial to you and your role as the 2022/23 SRC. Induction is also a way for you to develop relationships that go beyond today and this week so that we all work together fluently,” explained Ngculu.

The SRC induction is a four-day event scheduled from today, Monday 24 to Thursday, 27 October 2022. Each day of the programme consists of different outcomes. Day one’s programme’s outcome was: to provide the SRC with a clear understanding on the role of the Executive Management (EM) and the Student Representative Council within the institution. As well as to foster effective communication between the EM and the SRC and lastly, to work towards creating a professional relationship between EM and SRC. The order of proceedings consisted of the opening remarks from the manager, Mr Masiza Ngculu, The role of the Student Representative Council in Institutions of Higher Learning by the Dean of Students, Dr Clement Moreku, the Registrar, Dr Maditsane Nkonoane focused his address on The DUT Way: Towards being Creative, Distinctive and Impactful. Concluding the presentations for the day was Dr David Mohale: Director Special Projects at the office of the Vice-Chancellor, and his address was on the Importance of effective relationships between the Executive Management and SRC-SRC as an effective partner.

All speakers encouraged the current SRC to lead with not only resilience but to also leave a positive legacy. Dr Nkonoane emphasized to the SRC that regardless of the different organisations they individually represent, when it is faced with the role of the SRC they represent the entire population of the student body at DUT.

Dr Nkonoane commented: “President Mntungwa, when you are in Durban or at DUT you will have students from different political organisations, you will not only serve the students that are EFF affiliated but you will represent all students. Deputy President, the same applies with you, when you are in the Midlands or DUT, whether you are SASCO or not, you must know that as the Deputy President you serve all students equally.”

Dr Mohale encouraged the student leaders to read and take advantage of the opportunities presented to them by the University and not to treat any of the University stakeholders as their enemies, while highlighting how all parties can successfully work together.
