A WORKING MOTHER’S INSPIRING CUM LAUDE ACHIEVEMENT AT DUT

While many people would have given up under the pressure of balancing work, motherhood and studies, 34-year-old Sindisiwe Dlamini refused to let her circumstances define her future. Through determination and sacrifice, the Mandeni-born graduate walked across the stage at the Olive Convention Centre on Monday morning, 18 May 2026, during the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) 2026 Autumn Graduation Ceremony, proudly graduated Cum Laude with an Advanced Diploma in Accounting.

Originally from Gingindlovu and now residing in Durban, Sindisiwe ’s academic journey was marked by resilience and sacrifice. Balancing part-time studies with full-time job while raising her child demanded immense discipline and commitment. Although the pressure felt overwhelming, she remained determined and never lost sight of her dream of obtaining her qualification.

Graduating Cum Laude came as a complete surprise to Sindisiwe, making the achievement even more meaningful. For her, the recognition symbolises the countless sacrifices, consistency and perseverance she had displayed throughout her studies. She believes the award serves as proof that hard work and determination eventually pays off.

“I never imagined that my efforts would be recognised in such a special way. Graduating with Cum Laude reminds me that the difficult days, sleepless night and sacrifices were all worth it. It is proof that with determination, discipline and faith in yourself, anything is possible,” she shared.

Currently Sindisiwe is employed at MANCOSA as an assessment coordinator, she is responsible for managing and processing payments. Her passion for accounting and working with numbers inspired her decision to pursue this qualification. She enjoys analysing financial information and solving problems, which motivated her to continue growing within the field.

Sindisiwe describes herself as someone who values integrity and respect, believing in doing the right thing even when no one is watching. She also emphasises the importance of professionalism, kindness and fairness in all aspects of life.

After telling her family the exciting news of her achievement, they were filled with joy and pride, something she says motivated her even more. Becoming a role model to her siblings and inspiring those around her remains one of her proudest accomplishments.

Looking ahead, Sindisiwe plans to pursue her postgraduate studies to further expand her knowledge and skills in accounting. Her long-term goal is to register with a recognised professional body, specialising in payroll accounting and eventually providing services to multiple organisations.

Encouraging other students who may face similar challenges, Sindisiwe advises them to remain disciplined, manage their time effectively and stay consistent even during difficult moments.

“It will not always be easy but never give up. Believe in yourself and stay focused on your goals,” she said.
