AARU SOCIAL RUN TO FOSTER BELONGING AND PRIDE ACROSS THE DUT COMMUNITY

AARU SOCIAL RUN TO FOSTER BELONGING AND PRIDE ACROSS THE DUT COMMUNITY

The Durban University of Technology’s Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit (AARU) has invited the University community to participate in the Social Runners Club 5 km, 10 km and 21 km Race on Saturday, 25 July 2026, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The collaboration between AARU and the Social Runners Club was established to encourage a culture of wellness, healthy living and meaningful community engagement among the DUT community.

Alumni Relations Coordinator Ms Ronelle Lyson said that as a people centred institution, DUT recognises that holistic wellbeing is fundamental to both personal and professional success.

“This partnership creates an opportunity for staff, students, alumni and friends of the University to come together outside of the traditional academic environment and participate in an activity that promotes physical fitness, mental wellbeing and social connectedness. It is also an opportunity to strengthen relationships across the University community while fostering a sense of belonging and pride in the DUT family. The initiative reflects our commitment to creating opportunities that extend beyond the classroom by encouraging healthier lifestyles, networking and lifelong engagement with the University.”

The event caters for participants of all fitness levels, making it inclusive and accessible to everyone. Participants can choose from three race categories, namely a 5 km fun run for beginners and families, a 10 km race for recreational runners and a 21 km half marathon for more experienced athletes. On race day, participants will collect their race packs before the event, complete registration requirements and assemble at the designated starting areas according to their selected race category. Qualified marshals, medical personnel and volunteers will be stationed along the route to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

“The event is designed to be more than just a race. It celebrates wellness, teamwork and community spirit, offering participants an opportunity to connect with colleagues, fellow students, alumni and members of the broader Durban community in a positive and supportive environment,” she said.

Lyson said the initiative strongly reflects DUT’s ENVISION2030 strategy, particularly the institutional DNA strand of being people centred and engaged.

“ENVISION2030 recognises that universities should create environments where people can thrive academically, professionally and personally. The Social Run promotes wellness, inclusivity and engagement while strengthening relationships between staff, students, alumni and external partners. It demonstrates how the University can build healthier communities through meaningful partnerships and shared experiences beyond the classroom,” she added.

She explained that whether one is a seasoned runner or simply looking for an enjoyable and active morning, there is a race category for everyone.

“This event is not simply about crossing the finish line. It is about investing in your health, building meaningful connections and celebrating what we can achieve together as one DUT community. We look forward to seeing staff, students, alumni, family members and friends proudly representing the University and embracing the spirit of wellness, unity and active living,” she concluded.
