All Set for Second Cultural Camp to China

To celebrate 2015, The year of China in South Africa, 16 DUT students have been chosen to experience the cultures of China for two weeks as part of an exchange programme with Chinese universities.
This is the second Summer Camp to China for the Confucius Institute at DUT (DUT-CI). The DUT students are leaving this week and will be part of a group of 70 South African students to attend the two-week Summer Camp to China, Beijing and other Chinese cities where they will participate in a variety of exchange programmes with Chinese universities and local families. The first Student Winter camp took place in January this year (2015).

Dr Eddie Chaobo Fu, the Head of the DUT-CI said 2014 was the year of South Africa in China and that 2015 is the Year of China in South Africa according to the agreement between both governments. Dr Fu said another camp would take place at the end of this year (2015) for the selected registered and excellent Mandarin students from the University’s CI.

“I think these camps will provide new opportunities for our Mandarin learners to know more about modern China, learn a Chinese language in a Chinese language environment, experience Chinese culture and interact with peers and educators from Chinese universities. It will also be a golden chance to enable Chinese young people with more knowledge about South African languages, cultures and people. We firmly believe that these summer and winter camps are good ways for idea exchange, information sharing and mutual understanding between Chinese and South African young people, which is the main reason why it becomes an integral part of our DUT-CI annual programmes,” he said.

Students chosen to go to China are Sthembele Zulu, Gcebile Gumbi, Nomonde Duma, Zanele Nkosi, Thamsanqa Tonga, Londeka Msimang, Nkosiyapha Msomi, Khulekani Cele, Sizwe Sisoka, Phindile Ngidi, Sizwe Mkhize, Nombuso Nkosi, Blessing Thwala, Philiswa Mncube, Bhekabantu Gumede, Sinegugu Sithole and Sipho Biyela.

DUT’s Confucius Institute; the co-sponsor of the summer camp, in partnership with the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU) in China have created a series of programmes for students which include Mandarin enhancing courses, lectures and workshops themed on China-African relations and China-South African relations, the Fujian culture and economy, visits to historic scenic spots as well as various cultural programmes for the students to experience and enjoy.
