Anathi Ntombela, a 23-year-old from Nkandla, has successfully completed her Bachelor of Child and Youth Care degree at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) with Cum Laude. Her journey was both empowering and transformative, equipping her with the knowledge, skills, and passion to make a positive impact in the lives of children, youth, families, and communities. She walked the stage during the Faculty of Health Sciences graduation ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Tuesday, 20 May 2025
Throughout her studies, Anathi gained practical experience in schools and community organizations, developing essential skills like empathy, communication, resilience, and ethical decision-making. She attributes her growth to the course’s emphasis on emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and reflection, which helped her manage her own emotions and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
“This journey helped me grow both personally and professionally. I learned the importance of advocacy, cultural sensitivity, and being a reliable support system for young people. My time at DUT has shaped me into a confident and competent person and child and youth care practitioner, ready to make a positive difference in the lives of others,” she said.
Anathi’s motivation for pursuing a career in child and youth care stems from her own experiences growing up, where she often felt misunderstood and lacked emotional support. She wants to be a supportive figure for others, providing the care and understanding she didn’t always receive. Her passion for making a difference drives her to strive for excellence and integrity in her personal and professional life.
“I have always had a soft spot for children and young people, especially those facing difficulties. Growing up, I often felt misunderstood and lacked emotional support. That experience made me realise just how important it is for young people to have someone who genuinely listens and cares. I chose this path because I want to be that person for others, be the support I didn’t always have. For me, this is not just a career, it is a way of giving back and making sure no young person feels alone in their struggles,” said Ntombela
With her sights set on making a meaningful impact in child and youth development or community work, Anathi aims to gain experience, take on leadership roles, and contribute to positive change. Her story serves as an inspiration to young people, demonstrating the power of determination, hard work, and a passion for making a difference.
