ANGELIQUE NAICKER GRADUATES CUM LAUDE FOR THE SECOND TIME

What began as a journey filled with uncertainty and adjustment has become a story of resilience and academic excellence for Angelique Naicker from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, who graduated Cum Laude for the second time during the Durban University of Technology’s Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre on Monday, 25 May 2026.

At just 22 years old, Angelique proudly received her Advanced Diploma in Human Resources Management after years of hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. Her latest achievement comes after previously obtaining Cum Laude during her Diploma in Human Resources Management studies, making this milestone even more meaningful.

Angelique began her academic journey at DUT in 2022 under the Faculty of Management Sciences. She was initially placed at the Pietermaritzburg campus for her first year, an experience that pushed her far beyond her comfort zone.

“Being away from home for the first time was a huge adjustment for me, it taught me independence, resilience, and adaptability very early in my university journey,” she explained.

In her second year, she transferred to the Durban campus to be closer to her family. Although the move brought comfort and support, her journey was still filled with challenges, including financial difficulties, academic pressure, and moments of self-doubt.

“University can seem overwhelming when you come from a background where the world suddenly feels much bigger than what you have always known, there were stressful nights and moments where balancing studies and personal responsibilities felt impossible, but I kept pushing through,” she said.

Despite the obstacles, Angelique remained committed to her goals. Graduating Cum Laude for the second time became a reflection of the discipline, consistency, and determination she carried throughout her studies.

“For me, this achievement represents more than academics it represents sacrifice, perseverance, growth, and believing in yourself even during difficult times,” she shared.

As the first graduate in her family, Angelique says the achievement carries great emotional significance for her loved ones.

“My parents sacrificed so much to give me opportunities they never had. Seeing how proud and emotional they were made every challenge worth it. My younger sisters also look up to me, and that motivates me to continue striving for success,” she said.

Human Resources Management was not originally her first choice of study. However, during her time at DUT, she discovered a genuine passion for the field and developed a love for working with people and understanding workplace dynamics.

“I realised that Human Resources is where I truly belong, I enjoy helping people and creating positive working environments,” she said.

Angelique strongly associates herself with DUT’s values of integrity, respect, and excellence. she stated that they guided her academically and professionally.

Looking ahead, she hopes to continue her studies through postgraduate qualifications once her financial situation allows, with plans to resume studying in 2027. Her long-term goal is to become an HR Manager and contribute positively within organisations through ethical leadership and employee development.

She also hopes her story will inspire other students who may feel discouraged by their circumstances.

“My story is proof that humble beginnings do not determine your future, with faith, perseverance, and support, anything is possible,” she said.

To first-year students beginning their own journeys, Angelique offers simple but powerful advice “Do not let temporary setbacks define your future. Stay consistent, believe in yourself, ask for help when needed, and never underestimate how far determination can take you,” she advised.
